How the match is made

The matcher estimates frame rates for your game at the monitor's resolution, quality, ray tracing and upscaling, then compares them with the refresh rate. A card that reaches 90 percent of the refresh rate counts as a match, 70 to 90 percent as close, and anything lower as below. Ultrawide 1440p is treated as about a third more work than standard 1440p.

Resolution and GPU load

MonitorRelative GPU workTypical goal
1080p1.0xHigh refresh esports on modest cards.
1440pAbout 1.6xThe sweet spot for mid-range and upper cards.
Ultrawide 1440pAbout 2.0xImmersion that needs a strong card.
4KAbout 2.7xBest with upscaling on a high-end card.

Frequently asked questions

What GPU do I need for a 1440p 144Hz monitor?

It depends on the game. Esports titles reach 144 FPS on modest cards, while demanding games usually need an upper mid-range card or better, often with DLSS. Pick your game and settings in the matcher to see which RTX 50 cards reach 144 FPS at 1440p.

Is a 4K monitor worth it for gaming?

It looks sharper, but it needs far more GPU power, around double the work of 1440p. Upscaling like DLSS makes 4K practical on strong cards. If you prefer high frame rates over image detail, a 1440p high-refresh monitor is often the better value.

Does my GPU need to match my monitor's refresh rate?

Not exactly. Your GPU does not need to hit the maximum refresh rate in every game, and variable refresh rate keeps motion smooth below it. But a card that averages well under your refresh rate wastes some of the monitor's potential, so aim for at least 70 to 90 percent.

What is an ultrawide resolution like 3440x1440?

It has about a third more pixels than standard 1440p, so it needs roughly a third more GPU power for the same frame rate. The matcher includes ultrawide 1440p so you can see which cards keep up, with and without upscaling.

Do G-Sync and FreeSync change the GPU I need?

Not the GPU requirement, but they change how smooth it feels. G-Sync and FreeSync match the monitor to your frame rate, so you can run below the maximum refresh rate without tearing. They make a slightly weaker GPU feel better, but they do not add frames.
