What PPI tells you

Pixels per inch (PPI) measures how tightly pixels are packed. A higher number means finer detail and smoother text, while a lower number means larger, more visible pixels. The calculator also gives the pixel pitch, the physical size of the screen and the viewing distance beyond which individual pixels are hard to distinguish.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good PPI for a gaming monitor?

Around 90 to 110 PPI looks sharp for desktop gaming. A 27 inch 1440p monitor is about 109 PPI, a 24 inch 1080p about 92 PPI and a 27 inch 4K about 163 PPI. Higher PPI gives finer detail but needs more GPU power to drive.

How do I calculate PPI?

Divide the diagonal length of the screen in pixels by its diagonal size in inches. The diagonal in pixels is the square root of width squared plus height squared. For example, a 27 inch 2560 by 1440 monitor has about 109 pixels per inch.

Is 4K worth it on a 27 inch monitor?

It gives about 163 PPI, which is very sharp and makes text crisp, but needs far more GPU power than 1440p. Upscaling like DLSS helps. If you prioritise high frame rates, 1440p at 27 inches is a popular balance of sharpness and speed.

What monitor size suits 1080p, 1440p and 4K?

1080p suits 24 inches, 1440p suits 27 inches and 4K suits 32 inches or larger at normal desk distances. Bigger screens at the same resolution look softer because the pixels are larger. Use the calculator to compare the pixel density of any combination.
