Ray tracing games guide

Modelled estimate. Apply the settings, then fine-tune in your game.

How the settings are picked

The generator estimates frame rates for every combination of quality preset, upscaling mode, ray tracing level and frame generation your card supports. It scores each for visual quality, giving more credit to higher presets and ray tracing and subtracting a little for stronger upscaling and frame generation. It then returns the highest-scoring combination that reaches your target, plus two alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

How does the settings generator choose?

It tests combinations of quality preset, upscaling mode, ray tracing and frame generation for your card, game and resolution. It picks the one with the best image quality that still reaches your target frame rate, and it avoids frame generation when the rendered frame rate would be too low.

Should I lower graphics settings or use DLSS first?

Try upscaling first, because DLSS Quality or Balanced loses little detail and gains many frames. Lower the heaviest settings next, such as shadows and ray tracing. Cutting every setting to Low is usually the worst way to gain performance.

Which settings cost the most performance?

Ray tracing and path tracing cost the most, followed by shadow quality, volumetric effects and resolution. Texture quality costs little performance but uses VRAM. The generator weighs these effects together to find the cheapest way to your target.

Are these settings exact for my game?

They are a starting point. The tool uses a model of performance rather than testing each game, so real results vary. Apply the suggested preset and upscaling mode, then adjust one setting at a time while watching your frame rate.
