How much RAM do I need for gaming?
Pick a game and tell us what else you run. Get the RAM you need for smooth play, and whether your current memory is enough.
How the RAM total is worked out
The calculator starts with the memory the game itself recommends, taken from the publisher where listed. It adds about 4 GB for Windows and drivers, then more for the browser and chat apps, recording or streaming software, and any editing or AI work you do alongside. It rounds the total up to the next common kit size.
RAM sizes at a glance
| Capacity | Best for |
|---|---|
| 8 GB | Light and older games only. Tight today. |
| 16 GB | Most gaming with a browser and chat open. |
| 32 GB | Heavy games, streaming and multitasking. |
| 64 GB | Editing, 3D work, local AI and big mod lists. |
Memory can also limit your CPU in some games. Check the bottleneck checker and read our processor and memory bottleneck guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is 16GB of RAM enough for gaming in 2026?
For most games, yes, especially with a browser and chat app open. Some large open-world and simulation games, and anyone who streams, records or edits while playing, benefit from 32GB. Pick your game and habits in the calculator to see where you land.
Does more RAM increase FPS?
Only when you do not have enough. Once a game has the memory it needs, extra RAM adds nothing to frame rate. Running short causes stutter and long load times because Windows swaps data to the drive. Faster RAM and dual-channel setups can help a little in some games.
Should I use two sticks or four?
Two sticks in dual channel is usually the best choice, because it is simpler, runs faster and is more stable, especially with DDR5. Four sticks give more capacity but often need lower speeds. Buy a 2x16GB or 2x32GB kit rather than four smaller sticks.
How much RAM do I need for streaming and gaming?
Streaming adds encoding software, a browser and overlays, so 32GB gives comfortable headroom. 16GB can work for simple streaming, but modern games already use a lot. Add your streaming and recording options in the calculator to see the combined total.
