How to compare graphics cards properly

Start with the game and resolution you actually play at, because the ranking changes. A card with a wide memory bus and plenty of VRAM pulls ahead at 4K, while a cheaper card can look fine at 1080p. Then check three things the headline FPS hides: whether the VRAM is enough for your textures and ray tracing, how much power the card draws, and which upscaling and frame generation features it supports.

What each row in the table means

RowWhy it matters
Typical performanceA relative score across modern games, with the RTX 4090 set to 100.
Memory (VRAM)Running out causes stutter. See how much VRAM you need.
Memory type and busGDDR7 and a wider bus move data faster, which helps at high resolutions.
Board powerSets PSU size, heat and noise. Manufacturer figure at launch.
Performance per 100 WEfficiency: higher means more frames for each watt.
Upscaling and frame generationDLSS 4, Multi Frame Generation, FSR 4 and XeSS change how fast a game feels.

Frequently asked questions

How does the GPU comparison tool work?

You choose two or three graphics cards, a game, a resolution and optional ray tracing or upscaling. The tool estimates frame rates for each card from a relative performance score and the game's demand, then lines up specs, memory, power draw and efficiency so the differences are easy to see.

How accurate are the performance numbers?

They are modelled estimates built from published specifications and typical independent review results, assuming a fast CPU. Expect them to land within roughly 15 percent of real results. Drivers, game patches, cooling and the specific card model can shift the outcome, so use the percentages for comparison rather than as guarantees.

Is the RTX 5070 faster than the RTX 4070 Super?

In our estimates the RTX 5070 sits a few percent ahead of the RTX 4070 Super in raster games, with 12GB of memory on both. The bigger difference is features, because only RTX 50 cards offer 4x Multi Frame Generation. Load the comparison to see the exact gap in your game.

Does more VRAM make a graphics card faster?

Not directly. VRAM does not raise the frame rate until a game needs more than the card has. Past that point textures spill into system memory and you get stutter and sharp frame-rate drops. Cards with 12GB to 16GB handle modern high-resolution textures and ray tracing more comfortably than 8GB models.

Why does performance per watt matter?

Efficiency decides how much heat, noise and power supply headroom a card needs. A card that delivers similar frame rates at lower board power runs cooler, fits smaller cases and costs less to run. It matters most in compact builds, laptops converted to desktops, and homes with high electricity prices.
