Game download time and data usage calculator
Enter a game size and your internet speed. See how long the download takes, the real speed in MB/s and how much of your data cap it uses.
How download time is worked out
The calculator converts your speed from megabits to megabytes per second by dividing by eight, then applies your efficiency percentage to allow for overhead. Game size in gigabytes is divided by that real speed to give the time. If you have a data cap, it also shows how much of it the downloads use.
Download time by speed
| Speed | 50 GB | 100 GB | 150 GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 Mbps | 2 h 37 min | 5 h 14 min | 7 h 51 min |
| 100 Mbps | 1 h 18 min | 2 h 37 min | 3 h 55 min |
| 500 Mbps | 16 min | 31 min | 47 min |
| 1000 Mbps | 8 min | 16 min | 24 min |
Figures assume 85 percent efficiency. Check whether your PC can run the game first with the can my PC run it checker, and plan drive space with the recording size calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to download a 100GB game?
At 100 Mbps with typical overhead it takes roughly two and a half hours, at 500 Mbps about half an hour and at 1 Gbps about 15 minutes. Real speeds vary with the store servers and your Wi-Fi, so enter your own speed in the calculator for a closer figure.
What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?
Internet speeds are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), while downloads show megabytes per second (MB/s). There are eight bits in a byte, so divide Mbps by eight. A 400 Mbps connection tops out around 50 MB/s before overhead.
Why is my download slower than my plan speed?
Wi-Fi interference, busy store servers, other devices on your network and protocol overhead all reduce speed. A wired connection and a quiet network help. The efficiency box lets you model a realistic share of your advertised speed, usually 80 to 90 percent.
How much data do game downloads use?
A download uses roughly its install size, and updates add more over time. Large games can be 100GB or more, so a monthly data cap can disappear quickly. The calculator shows how much of your cap a download uses and how many fit in a month.
